Tips for Reducing your UK Home Insurance Premiums
|
We've compiled a helpful list of premium-reducing tips because we know you want to get your policy at the best price possible, but remember It can be worth spending a little more for better service. You need your insurance company to be as helpful as possible in the event of you having to make a claim.
- Buying via the Internet can save you money as online companies generally have lower overheads.
- Make sure you shop around and compare quotes and levels of cover. The cheapest quote may not always be the most appropriate for your needs.
- Evaluate the benefits of taking additional accidental damage cover and other optional policy extras.
- Install and maintain a NACOSS approved alarm. Many insurance companies will give discounts for approved alarm systems.
- Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
- Fit a 5-lever Mortice lock as recommended by most insurance companies. If you need further free security advice, contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police station.
- Fit smoke alarms for your own safety, and to take advantage of potential savings on your insurance policy.
- If you are thinking about installing expensive security systems check first with your insurer to make sure that it does qualify for a discount. Find out how much the system would cost and how much you would be saving on premiums.
- Enquire about discounts for buying your motor insurance from the same company as your home insurance. Discounts can be as much as 30% from some companies.
- Taking out your buildings and contents insurance under the same policy can sometimes entitle you to a discount.
- Regularly review the value of your possessions and the limits in your policy. Make sure new additions to your home are covered and that you adjust cover for something that has depreciated dramatically (i.e. obsolete home computer) or something you no longer own. Make sure you are not paying for cover that you don't need.
- Some UK home insurance companies may agree lower premium in return for a higher excess.
- If applicable ask about discounts for those aged 50 and over.
